Taxonomy Name Servers (TNS) and Search Engines (TSE)

Taxonomic Name Servers and Search Engines

Accurate and flexible taxon taxonomy will be integral to the functioning of BioCorder, providing a "key" to discover information about a taxon. A Taxonomic Name Server and Taxonomic Search Engine developed by Rod Page will be used to prototype integration between these name providers and their dependent modules. We will also explore the relationship between BioCorder modules and independent taxon name/concept providers such as uBio, ITIS, and GBIF.

Glasgow Taxonomy Name Server
This is Rod Page's experimental tool for finding taxonomic names. Specifically this can be used for serving, validating and comparing biological classifications. It is not intended to compete with other name servers, but act as a development tool and web service for databases we have developed that require a validated taxonomy.

Glasgow Taxonomy Search Engine
Rod Page's test bed for a web service approach to federating taxonomic name databases. Put in English, this takes your query and talks to a number of different databases, asking each one whether they contain that name. Each database has it's on way of returning information about a name, but the gory details are hidden from you.

Other Taxonomic Name or Concept Servers:

ITIS (Integrated Taxonomic Information System)
IndexFungorum
IPNI (International Plant Names Index)
uBio (Universal Biological Indexer and Organizer)
NCBI (NCBI Taxonomy)
